The family name was actually Andolini, but Vito is renamed by Ellis Island immigration officials. He was smuggled out of Sicily at the age of eight to save him from being executed by the local mafia chieftain, Don Ciccio (who has already murdered his father and elder brother, and murders his mother after she allows Vito to escape).
